Bukedo and Raffia Fruit Bowls: 12"
Description
Add vibrant color, texture, and artisan craftsmanship to your home with our Fair Trade Bukedo & Raffia Basket Bowls, handwoven in Uganda using traditional coiling techniques. Known for their bold dyes and progressive, modern patterns, these colorful woven bowls are especially popular as wall décor and statement art.
Traditionally used for serving food, these handcrafted baskets also function beautifully as decorative tabletop bowls, fruit bowls, or display trays. Their bright palette and coordinated designs make them easy to style alone or in a grouped wall basket arrangement featuring multiple sizes and patterns.
These baskets are made by wrapping colorfully dyed palm raffia around a coil of bukedo, the local Ugandan term for banana leaf stalks. The banana leaf stalks are pulled apart into long, thin strips, dried, bundled into coils, and then wrapped tightly with dyed raffia. Artisans must skillfully extend additional bukedo into the coil as they weave to maintain consistent shape, strength, and structure. Each coil is then wrapped and secured to the next, creating a durable, sculptural bowl. Unlike many handwoven baskets that are completely one-of-a-kind, Bukedo and Raffia bowls are known for their playful consistency—featuring coordinated color palettes and repeating design themes that make decorating simple and visually impactful.
Each bowl is handmade, meaning slight variations in color and design are part of the authentic artisan process.
